Camping in Lugo: Playa de las Catedrales, Roman wall and Ribeira Sacra

Lugo is the largest Galician province, with a diversity of landscapes ranging from the coast of the Mariña lucense to the inland valleys of the Ribeira Sacra and the Ancares mountains. Its capital, the city of Lugo, has the unique distinction of preserving its Roman wall intact, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The wall walk, almost two and a half kilometres long, rings the old town and lets you circle the city on the same stones laid by the legionaries more than sixteen centuries ago. The Roman baths discovered beneath the ground and the provincial museum complete a visit that mixes history and present-day city life.

The Mariña lucense is the coastal strip in the north of the province, a succession of rías, beaches and cliffs whose best-known jewel is the Playa de las Catedrales. At low tide, the arches and caves carved by the sea into the rock form a natural cathedral of monumental scale that is one of the most photographed landscapes in Spain. Access is regulated by advance booking in high season to protect the environment. The rías of Ribadeo, Viveiro, O Barqueiro and Ortigueira each offer a different character: fine-sand beaches, fishing villages with working harbours, clifftop hiking routes and birdwatching in the wetlands. San Andrés de Teixido, on Cape Ortegal, is a popular pilgrimage sanctuary with one of the most spectacular views on the whole Galician coast.

The Way of St James enters Galicia through O Cebreiro, a mountain village set at more than a thousand metres of altitude in the Ancares, with pallozas (pre-Roman buildings with a circular plan and a thatched roof) that still stand as testimony to an ancient way of life. The Lugo stretch of the French Way crosses landscapes of eucalyptus, meadows and granite hamlets over two long days before crossing the border with A Coruña. The Ancares of Lugo, to the south-east of the province, are Atlantic mountains of great ecological value, with forests of chestnut and oak, slate hamlets and a tranquillity that makes them a refuge for hiking and mountain biking away from the crowded routes.

The Ribeira Sacra of Lugo, in the canyon of the Miño and its tributaries, shares with Ourense one of the most distinctive wine landscapes in Spain. The vineyards grown on terraces on dizzying slopes produce white Godello wines and red Mencía wines of internationally recognised quality. The Romanesque monasteries that line the riverbank, some accessible only by boat, are essential stops on any tour of the area. Catamaran trips through the Sil canyon, which on this stretch is technically both in Lugo and in Ourense, are among the most popular excursions in inland Galicia.

Lugo's cuisine is distinguished by its flavours of the land: the pulpo á feira of the fairs of O Carballiño and Lugo city, Galician stew with turnip tops and unto, Cebreiro cheese with designation of origin, lacón and chestnuts in autumn. The wines of Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras accompany a table that reflects the generosity of the Galician countryside. The campsites of the Mariña are an ideal base for exploring the coast and making excursions inland; those of the Ribeira Sacra allow you to combine nature, culture and wine tourism in a setting of extraordinary beauty.
