Camping in the Balearic Islands: island nature and outdoor living

The Balearic Islands are a Mediterranean archipelago with a character of its own and extraordinarily varied landscapes. Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza share the same sea but offer very different experiences: the great mountain range of the Serra de Tramuntana, the cliffs and unspoilt coves of Menorca, the almond fields of inland Ibiza. Exploring them from a campsite or overnight area is the most direct way to reach that unfiltered nature, far from the big tourist resorts.

The choice of registered campsites in the Balearic Islands is limited compared with the mainland. Regional regulations govern wild camping and restrict overnight stays in protected natural areas, so it is worth getting well informed before planning your trip. Even so, the existing campsites are well located and let you use the campsite as a base for exploring the island by car, bicycle or kayak. Motorhomes have some designated areas at their disposal, although the choice varies by island and season.

The Balearic climate favours a long season: from the end of March until well into October temperatures are pleasant, the sea is at its best in July and August, and spring and autumn offer sunny days with fewer tourists. It is in these in-between seasons that camping makes the most sense: natural areas are calm, villages recover their everyday rhythm and prices fall noticeably.

The activities that can be combined with a stay at a campsite are very varied. On the coast, kayaking, snorkelling and paddle surfing take centre stage in coves of crystal-clear water. Inland, hiking along historic paths such as the Camí de Cavalls in Menorca or the routes of the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca lets you discover the island in depth. Culture is not lacking either: Dalt Vila in Ibiza, the talayotic monuments of Menorca and the castles and monasteries of Mallorca give substance to any itinerary.

Balearic cuisine is another reason to stay a few more days: Mallorcan ensaimada and sobrasada, lobster stew and mature Mahón cheese from Menorca, bullit de peix and Ibizan flaó. Each island has its local markets, its beach bars serving fresh fish and its patron saint festivals where tradition is lived with intensity. The Balearic Islands are a destination for those who want more than a beach: a combination of nature, history and gastronomy that is especially enjoyed from the simplicity of a campsite.
