Camping in Extremadura: dehesas, national parks and heritage without the crowds

Extremadura is one of the regions of Spain where inland camping offers a more authentic and peaceful experience. With a very low population density, vast natural areas and an exceptional historical heritage, the region is especially attractive to those who want to get away from the crowded coastal destinations. The ideal seasons are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild; summer in Extremadura can be very hot, especially on the plains of the south, although the valleys of northern Cáceres offer coolness and shade even in July and August.

Monfragüe National Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve and a Starlight Reserve, is Extremadura's natural landmark. From viewpoints such as the Salto del Gitano you can spot griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, Spanish imperial eagles and black storks in one of the most spectacular concentrations of birds of prey in Europe. The dehesa ecosystem that surrounds it, with centuries-old holm oaks and cork oaks, is unique in the world and defines much of the Extremaduran landscape. At night, the absence of light pollution makes this setting one of the best natural astronomical observatories on the Peninsula.

Northern Cáceres has the greenest and most spectacular valleys in the region. The Jerte Valley is at its most photogenic in March and April, when more than a million cherry trees cover the hillsides in white blossom. The natural pools of the River Jerte are one of the attractions of summer. La Vera is home to the monastery of Yuste, where Emperor Charles V retired, and offers gorges and cascades among chestnut groves. Las Hurdes, for decades associated with images of hardship, now surprises with mountain landscapes, slate architecture and well-preserved nature. The Sierra de Gata, with villages such as the medieval San Martín de Trevejo, closes this green arc of the north to the west.

Culturally, Extremadura has no rival in the interior of the Peninsula. The city of Cáceres has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe, a World Heritage Site, where Renaissance palaces and defensive towers sit side by side within the same walled perimeter. Mérida was the capital of Roman Lusitania and preserves an extraordinary archaeological complex: theatre, amphitheatre, circus, Temple of Diana, aqueduct and the longest Roman bridge in ancient Hispania. Trujillo, birthplace of conquistadors of the New World, and Guadalupe, with its monastery also declared a World Heritage Site, complete a first-class cultural itinerary that combines perfectly with stays at campsites.

Extremaduran campsites cater for every kind of stay: pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes, bungalows for those who prefer to travel without luggage, and glamping options in natural settings where comfort does not clash with nature. The regional cuisine is another reason to visit: acorn-fed Iberian ham from the dehesa, torta del Casar, La Vera paprika with designation of origin, Jerte cherries and Ribera del Guadiana wines make up a quality larder that turns every meal at the campsite into an added pleasure of the trip.
