Camping in Gipuzkoa: the Basque Coast, San Sebastián and the Zumaia flysch
Gipuzkoa is the province with the highest concentration of campsites in the Basque Country, and one of the reasons is obvious: its Cantabrian coastline strings together beaches, cliffs and fishing villages within a few kilometres. San Sebastián is the great draw, with La Concha bay considered one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe. Mount Urgull closes the bay on one side and Igueldo on the other, and between them lies a city that combines beach, cliff-top promenades, belle époque architecture and the best concentration of pintxo bars on the planet. The Gros district, with Zurriola beach, attracts surfers looking for waves in the middle of the city.
Following the coast westwards you come to Zarautz, with more than two kilometres of beach and a swell that puts it on the professional surfing circuit calendar. Getaria, right next to Zarautz, is a medieval village with its own tortoise-shaped island joined to the mainland by an isthmus, the birthplace of the navigator Juan Sebastián Elkano and the couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga. Its open-air grills of sea bream and turbot are a gastronomic institution on the Basque coast. Further west, Zumaia combines two attractions in one: Itzurun beach, calm and with cool waters, and the flysch, geological strata between 50 and 100 million years old that form vertical cliffs over four kilometres long which can be explored on foot in the Basque Coast Geopark.
At the eastern end of the province, Hondarribia has one of the best-preserved walled old towns on the Cantabrian coast, with 16th-century palaces and manor houses and a calm beach sheltered by the mouth of the Bidasoa opposite the French coast at Hendaye. From Mount Jaizkibel you can take in the Bay of Biscay and Txingudi bay in one of the best panoramas of the Basque coast.
Inland Gipuzkoa has the Baroque sanctuary of Loyola, birthplace of Saint Ignatius, and the valleys of the Goierri and the Urola, where smoked Idiazábal cheese is made from latxa sheep's milk. Aralar Natural Park takes in beech woods, megalithic dolmens and mountain pastures straddling Gipuzkoa and Navarre. For cyclists and walkers, the network of paths between farmhouses and the Urola greenway are routes accessible to all levels. The Atlantic climate guarantees greenery all year round and a mild summer temperature that makes camping in Gipuzkoa an excellent option for those escaping the heat of the interior of the Peninsula.
