Camping in Málaga: Costa del Sol, Caminito del Rey and the most Mediterranean mountains

Málaga is the Andalusian province with the longest tourist tradition and the one that offers the most direct combination of beach, mountains and city. Its coast, christened the Costa del Sol, stretches from the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Site in the east, with its cliff-backed coves and the Cascada de la Miel falling into the sea, to San Roque in the west, on the border with the province of Cádiz. Along this stretch of coastline of more than one hundred and fifty kilometres, dark-sand beaches alternate with more secluded coves, with seafront promenades in towns with a personality of their own such as Nerja, Torrox, Torre del Mar and Fuengirola, and the established resorts of Marbella and Estepona that are part of the collective imagination of Mediterranean tourism.

The interior of Málaga holds some of the most spectacular experiences in Andalusia. The Caminito del Rey, a walkway of wood and steel suspended over the vertical walls of the Gaitanes gorge, in the municipality of Ardales, is one of the best-known hiking routes in Spain. The route passes through the Chorro gorge and the Hoyo valley, with views that combine vertical limestone, the turquoise water of the Guadalhorce reservoir and Mediterranean vegetation. The Serranía de Ronda, to the west, is another world within the province: Ronda, with its Tajo gorge and the Puente Nuevo bridge suspended over the abyss, is one of the most photographed towns in Spain. The white villages around it, such as Casares, Benadalid, Júzcar and Genalguacil, preserve a human scale and a vernacular architecture that contrasts with the coast.

The Sierra de las Nieves, declared a National Park in 2021, protects forests of Spanish fir (pinsapo), the oldest conifer in western Europe, on the slopes of the sierra above Tolox and Yunquera. The pinsapo grows naturally in only two Spanish mountain ranges and in northern Morocco, which makes this park a space of exceptional biogeographical value. The routes in the National Park lead into shady forests where moss covers the rocks and the song of the thrush replaces the sound of the sea. The temperature difference between the coast and the summit of Torrecilla, at almost two thousand metres, can exceed fifteen degrees in the height of summer, making the mountains a natural refuge for campers who want to escape the heat of the coast.

The city of Málaga has transformed itself in recent decades into a first-rate cultural destination. The Picasso Museum, the Centre Pompidou Málaga, the Carmen Thyssen Museum and the Málaga Art Museum, all in the historic centre, form a European-level cultural axis accessible from any campsite in the surrounding area. The El Palo district and the Pedregalejo beaches keep up the tradition of espetos of sardines on bamboo canes, an authentic Málaga scene that no visitor should miss. The cuisine of the province includes gazpachuelo, porra antequerana, pickled anchovies of Málaga, fried aubergines with cane honey and the convent sweets of Antequera, all washed down with the muscatel and sweet wines of the Axarquía.
