Camping in Cáceres: green valleys, Monfragüe and medieval heritage

The province of Cáceres has most of Extremadura's campsites and offers the richest combination of nature, culture and gastronomy. Its northern half has a mountainous relief with deep valleys, mountain rivers and Atlantic woodland that contrasts with the clichéd image of the dry plateau; its southern half opens onto classic dehesa and the plains of the Tagus. This diversity makes it possible to plan very varied camping routes within the same province.

Monfragüe National Park is the natural jewel of Cáceres. Located where the Tagus meets the Tiétar, its slate and quartzite canyons are home to the largest colony of griffon vultures in Europe, as well as Spanish imperial eagles, black storks, Egyptian vultures and black vultures. The Salto del Gitano and Monfragüe castle are the most visited viewpoints. The Tajo Internacional Natural Park, on the border with Portugal, adds another area of great ornithological value where cranes spend the winter every year in their tens of thousands.

The Jerte Valley is the most visited destination in the province in spring, when the cherry blossom transforms the hillsides into a white mantle that lasts barely two or three weeks. The rest of the year the valley keeps its appeal with gorges for swimming, hiking routes among cherry and chestnut trees, and a well-distributed network of rural accommodation and campsites. The La Vera region, south of the Jerte, is home to the monastery of Yuste among oak and chestnut woods, and its gorges and cascades are a cool refuge in summer. Las Hurdes, accessible from the north, offers a landscape of slate hamlets, beehives and streams that has changed a great deal since Luis Buñuel shot his famous documentary there.

The city of Cáceres has one of the best-preserved medieval walled enclosures in Europe. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its old town brings together Renaissance palaces, Gothic towers and convents in a compact space that can be explored on foot in a few hours. Trujillo, 45 kilometres away, adds another spectacular main square with the equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro and the Moorish castle on the rock. Guadalupe, with its monastery that also holds World Heritage status, completes a monumental triangle of the first rank in Europe. Plasencia, with its double cathedral and weekly market dating from the 12th century, is the gateway to all the valleys of the north.

Campsite accommodation includes pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes, bungalows and glamping in natural settings. The Sierra de Gredos, on its Extremaduran side, attracts walkers and lovers of high mountains. The province's cuisine includes torta del Casar, a strongly flavoured sheep's cheese with its own designation of origin, smoked La Vera paprika, Jerte cherries and Iberian dehesa pork products that here reach their purest expression.
