Camping in Albacete: Mediterranean mountains, lagoons and uncrowded sierras

The province of Albacete breaks every cliché about the plains of La Mancha as soon as you leave the capital behind. To the south-east, the Sierra de Alcaraz and the Sierra del Segura form a mountain range of great beauty, with deep valleys, pine and juniper forests, and rivers that rise among limestone crags. The River Mundo emerges from a spectacular waterfall in the Calares del Mundo, within a natural area with limited access that is well worth the effort of the walk. The altitude of these sierras tempers the heat of the La Mancha summer and allows you to enjoy cool, pleasant temperatures even in July and August.

The Lagunas de Ruidera, at the far north of the province on the border with Ciudad Real, are the most visited spot and the one that attracts the most campers. Its fifteen turquoise lagoons, linked by natural waterfalls and surrounded by pines and holm oaks, offer opportunities for swimming, kayaking, hiking and watching waterbirds. The setting of Ruidera Natural Park also has the appeal of being linked to the adventures of Don Quixote, as Cervantes placed the Cave of Montesinos here.

The villages of the Albacete sierra have a character of their own that sets them apart from the rest of the province. Yeste, perched on a rocky spur above the Segura reservoir, Riópar next to the source of the Mundo, and Letur with its Mudéjar quarter are examples of small, authentic places that mass tourism has not reached. Exploring this area by motorhome or with a tent, stopping at villages and lightly signposted hiking routes, is an experience that rewards the search for the genuine.

Albacete's cuisine draws on the traditions of La Mancha and Murcia. Manchego gazpacho with partridge or rabbit, atascaburras with cod and potato, miguelitos from La Roda and the olla manchega of the sierra are hearty dishes that feed you well after a day's hiking. The wines of Almansa, made with garnacha tintorera grapes, are little known outside the region and have a marked personality that pleasantly surprises anyone who tries them.

The capital, Albacete, deserves a visit, even a short one. Its September fair is one of the most important in Castilla-La Mancha, and its provincial museum has one of the best collections of traditional cutlery in Spain. The city also has a tree-lined promenade, the Abelardo Sánchez park, which is an oasis of coolness in the hot summers of the plateau. For campers who combine nature with city breaks, the province offers a balanced mix of mountains, lagoons and a city with a character of its own.
