The Valencian Community is one of the great destinations for European camping, and it is no coincidence. Its mild climate, with temperate winters and more than three hundred days of sunshine a year in many of its districts, allows campsites to open practically all year round. This climatic privilege, combined with an extensive and varied Mediterranean coast and a lesser-known but equally valuable mountain interior, makes the region a perfect setting for both beach camping and nature tourism.
The Costa Blanca, in the province of Alicante, and the Costa del Azahar, in Castellón and northern Valencia, together offer hundreds of kilometres of coastline with fine-sand beaches, sheltered coves and cliffs above the sea. From the Peñón de Ifach in Calpe, a natural monument rising almost two hundred metres above the Mediterranean, to the dunes of Guardamar or the Pego-Oliva marshes, the coastal landscape changes constantly and always offers something new. Campers who prefer to pitch up beside the sea will find here one of the most deeply rooted camping traditions in Spain.
The interior has nothing to envy of the coastal strip. The Marina Alta and Marina Baixa districts of Alicante, the Espadán mountains and the Penyagolosa massif in Castellón, or the Serra Grossa and the Cabriel valleys in Valencia form a mosaic of Mediterranean mid-mountain landscapes ideal for hiking, mountain biking and discovering villages that have barely changed since the Middle Ages. Morella, Guadalest, Xàtiva and Morella are just some of the names that justify a trip to the Valencian interior with a tent or motorhome.
The region's natural parks broaden the possibilities even further: Montgó above Dénia and Jávea, the Albufera of Valencia with its rice paddies and lagoons, the Hoces del Cabriel with its waters for canoe descents, the Font Roja of Alcoi or the Columbretes Islands, a volcanic marine reserve off the coast of Castellón. Each of these areas offers a different nature experience and is accessible from the campsites in the surrounding area.
Valencian cuisine is, on its own, reason enough to choose this region. Paella, born in the rice fields of the Albufera, and the fideuà of Gandia are the great ambassadors, but local cooking goes much further: red prawns from Dénia, arròs a banda, all i pebre eel, cocas, nougat from Jijona and Alicante, horchata made from tiger nuts and wines from Utiel-Requena or the Marina Alta. At the region's campsites, the weekly market, the bar counter or your own barbecue become the perfect setting for enjoying all these flavours. The Valencian Community combines, like few regions, the comfort of the coast with the authenticity of the interior, making camping an especially complete way to discover it.
