Camping in Catalonia: the region with Spain's strongest camping tradition

Catalonia is, without a doubt, the autonomous community where camping is most deeply rooted in Spain. Its exceptional geography explains why: more than five hundred kilometres of Mediterranean coastline, the Pyrenean massif in all its splendour to the north, inland valleys of extraordinary beauty and a network of natural parks ranging from the volcanoes of La Garrotxa to the wetlands of the Ebro Delta. Camping here is not just a choice of accommodation; it is a way of experiencing the land.

The Costa Brava, in the province of Girona, and the Costa Daurada, in that of Tarragona, are the two great coastal hubs. The first fascinates with its coves among pines and granite rock, its waters of impossible colours and villages such as Cadaqués, Tossa de Mar, Calella de Palafrugell and Begur. The second seduces with its kilometres of fine sand, its calm waters and its accessibility for families with small children. On both coasts the choice of campsites is vast: from simple tent pitches to fully equipped bungalows and large pitches for motorhomes and caravans.

The Catalan Pyrenees are the perfect counterpoint to the coast. The provinces of Lleida and Girona share this mountain arc, which includes Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the Vall de Boí with its group of Romanesque churches declared a World Heritage Site, the Cerdanya, the Pallars Sobirà and the Val d'Aran with its own culture and language. Mountain campsites are the ideal base for hiking, skiing in winter, canyoning, rafting on the Noguera Pallaresa river, or simply for switching off beside a high mountain lake surrounded by firs and snow-capped peaks.

Inland Catalonia holds many surprises: the Montserrat massif with its monastery and climbing routes, the volcanic area of La Garrotxa with the Fageda d'en Jordà and its beech woods, unique on the peninsula, the vineyards of the Priorat and the Penedès, the landscape of the Ports de Tortosa and the medieval villages of the Empordà and the Segarra. Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona are four provincial capitals with a first-rate cultural heritage, rich in gastronomy and very well connected with the campsites around them.

Gastronomy is another reason to go camping in Catalonia. From pa amb tomàquet to suquet de peix, from butifarra to crema catalana, from the calçots of Valls to the wines of the Priorat or the cavas of the Penedès, the Catalan table combines tradition and excellence with the fresh produce of each comarca. Local markets and food fairs are a must-visit at any time of year. Catalonia welcomes with equal enthusiasm those looking for beach, mountains, culture or tranquillity, and it does so with a mature, well-distributed campsite infrastructure suited to all tastes and budgets.
