The province of Tarragona brings together three great travel experiences in a compact, well-connected area: the family beaches of the Costa Daurada, one of the most important ensembles of Roman archaeology in Spain, and the Ebro Delta, a wetland of singular beauty and biodiversity. Add to this an interior of world-renowned vineyards, villages perched dizzyingly on cliffs and first-rate Cistercian monasteries.
The Costa Daurada is, on its own merits, one of the coasts most chosen by families on the whole peninsula. Its beaches are wide, with fine golden sand and warm waters that are shallow near the shore, perfect for small children. From Torredembarra and Altafulla in the north to L'Ampolla and L'Ametlla de Mar in the south, by way of Salou, Cambrils, Mont-roig del Camp and Miami Platja, the choice of campsites is extensive and varied. There are campsites with direct access to the beach, with swimming pools, with entertainment in the high season and with facilities for large motorhomes. The sea temperature in summer is among the highest on the whole Spanish Mediterranean coast.
The city of Tarragona is a must-see. Its Roman walls from the 2nd century BC, the amphitheatre by the sea, the provincial forum, the Les Ferreres aqueduct (known as the Pont del Diable), the early Christian necropolis and the Archaeological Museum form an ensemble declared a World Heritage Site. The Rambla Nova, the Part Alta district and the old town complete a Mediterranean city with plenty of personality.
The Ebro Delta is one of the most important wetlands in the western Mediterranean. Rice fields that turn green and gold according to the season, flamingos, waders, lagoons, unspoilt beaches and a silence that contrasts with the bustling summer coast. Exploring it by bike or kayak is one of the most memorable experiences Catalonia has to offer. The campsites of the Delta have a quiet, nature-loving atmosphere, very different from that of the main coast.
The interior of the province holds other treasures: the Priorat, with its vineyards on llicorella terraces and wines of international standing; Siurana, a medieval village on a cliff with views over the reservoir and a world reference for sport climbing; and the triangle of Cistercian monasteries formed by Poblet (a World Heritage Site), Santes Creus and Vallbona de les Monges. Tarragona's cuisine has romesco as its iconic sauce, but also the calçots of Valls in the winter season, arròs amb costra, fish from the fish market and the wines of the Priorat and the Terra Alta. Camping in Tarragona means combining sun, history, nature and good food with the greatest of ease.
