Camping in Girona: the Costa Brava, the Pyrenees and the heart of the Empordà

The province of Girona has more campsites than any other in Catalonia and is probably one of those with the strongest camping tradition in all of Spain. The reason is simple: its geographical variety is extraordinary. In just a few hours of driving you can go from a cove of turquoise water on the Costa Brava to a Pyrenean meadow in the Cerdanya, passing extinct volcanoes in the Garrotxa or medieval villages in the Empordà. Girona has it all.

The Costa Brava stretches from Blanes to the French border at Portbou. It is a rugged coast of coves among pines and granite rock, cliffs, white villages and waters that change colour with the depth and the time of day. Cadaqués, with its skyline of whitewashed houses facing Cap de Creus, is perhaps the most photogenic place on the whole Spanish Mediterranean. Tossa de Mar preserves a walled medieval town above the sea. Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc, Tamariu and Begur are leading destinations for those looking for the most authentic Costa Brava. The campsites along this whole strip are numerous, of high quality and perfectly equipped for tents, caravans, motorhomes and bungalows.

The interior of Girona surprises those who discover it for the first time. The Garrotxa is a volcanic area unique on the Iberian Peninsula: the Croscat volcano, the Fageda d'en Jordà with its centuries-old beech woods, the city of Olot surrounded by volcanic cones. The Empordà, between the coast and the first Pyrenean foothills, is home to medieval villages such as Pals, Peratallada, Monells and the spectacular Besalú with its Romanesque bridge over the Fluvià river. The Alt Empordà is also the land of the tramontana, that northern wind which sculpts landscapes and characters.

In the Pyrenees of Girona, the Cerdanya offers the widest valley in the Pyrenees, a plateau more than a thousand metres above sea level with meadows, rivers and mountains on both sides. It is perfect for cycling, hiking, cross-country skiing and alpine skiing at resorts such as La Molina or Masella. The Ripollès, gateway to the Pyrenees, has the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll, one of the great monuments of Catalan Romanesque.

The city of Girona is an essential visit: the Jewish quarter (the Call), the coloured houses over the Onyar river, the cathedral with the widest Gothic nave in the world, the Arab baths. Girona's cuisine ranges from suquet de peix to mar i muntanya, from the cured meats of Olot to custard xuixos, from the wines of the Empordà to the cheeses of the Ripollès. Going camping in Girona means immersing yourself in one of the most complete and varied travel experiences that southern Europe has to offer.
