Camping in Barcelona: between the Mediterranean, the mountains and the most vibrant city in Catalonia

The province of Barcelona offers a combination that is hard to beat: the Maresme Coast and the Garraf Coast to the east and south, the interior of the Berguedà, the Bages and Osona just a few kilometres away, the Montserrat massif as the visual emblem of all Catalonia, and the city of Barcelona reachable by public transport from many coastal campsites. Camping in this province means having access, on a single trip, to the beach, the mountains, wine and culture.

The province's coastline has beaches well connected to Barcelona by commuter train. Maresme towns such as Calella, Pineda, Santa Susanna and Malgrat de Mar have a long camping tradition and combine proximity to the sea with full services for families, groups and couples. The Garraf Coast, further south, has more sheltered coves and a somewhat calmer atmosphere, with Sitges as a first-rate cultural and festive reference point.

Inland Barcelona is a world apart. The Montserrat massif, with its rock needles and Benedictine monastery, is a destination for hiking, climbing and spirituality. The Berguedà and Osona keep medieval villages, rural markets and routes through little-crowded natural parks such as Cadí-Moixeró. The Penedès is the region of cava and still wine, with wineries open to visitors and a landscape of vineyards that takes on spectacular colours in autumn. Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and Vilafranca del Penedès are must-stops for wine enthusiasts.

The city of Barcelona needs little introduction: the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter, Barceloneta, the Palau de la Música, the Raval, the markets of La Boqueria and Santa Caterina, and the Modernista architecture spread throughout the city. Many campers choose to stay at a campsite on the coast and take the train into Barcelona for the day, saving on accommodation without giving up any experience. Campsite accommodation ranges from tent and caravan pitches to bungalows, mobile homes and glamping options that let you enjoy nature without giving up comfort.

The province's cuisine draws on Catalan tradition and Mediterranean produce: fideuà, esqueixada de bacallà, cargols a la llauna, escalivada, cured meats from the Berguedà and desserts such as carquinyolis or panellets in the All Saints' season. The province of Barcelona is, in short, a complete camping destination in every season of the year, with a transport infrastructure that multiplies the possibilities of any getaway.
