Camping in the Basque Country: Cantabrian coast, green mountains and world-class gastronomy

The Basque Country brings together in a compact territory some of the most beautiful landscapes in northern Spain. The Cantabrian coast arrives here with impressive cliffs, fine sandy beaches and unique geological formations such as the Zumaia flysch, strata of rock millions of years old that meet the sea forming natural walls recognised internationally. Facing this wild coastline, the green interior of the Basque Country unfolds among beech woods, oak woods and fern-covered mountains where the Atlantic climate keeps everything permanently damp and cool.

Nature and hiking lovers find a first-rate destination in the Basque natural parks. The Gorbea Natural Park, with its emblematic summit of almost 1,500 metres and its centuries-old beech woods, is the great green lung of the community. Urkiola Park, between Biscay and Álava, offers accessible routes with spectacular views. The Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve protects an ecosystem of marshes, riverside woods and unspoilt beaches where you can go kayaking, birdwatching and cycle touring. For mountain bike enthusiasts, the inland valleys of Gipuzkoa and Biscay have networks of tracks between farmhouses that connect stone villages with a rural tradition.

The three capitals have very different personalities. San Sebastián seduces with La Concha bay, one of the most photographed urban beaches in Europe, its old town full of pintxo bars and its film and culinary tradition. Bilbao surprises those who arrive: the industrial regeneration that began with the Guggenheim Museum has turned the Nervión estuary into a showcase of contemporary architecture, without the city losing its character of a big town with markets, taverns and a vibrant old quarter. Vitoria-Gasteiz, the administrative capital, is a medium-sized, green and liveable city, with a ring of parks around it and a very well-preserved medieval centre.

Basque gastronomy needs no introduction: it is recognised as one of the best in the world. Pintxos are the most democratic expression of that culinary culture: going from bar to bar through the old town of San Sebastián, the Plaza Nueva in Bilbao or the centre of Vitoria is a gastronomic experience that is never forgotten. Txakoli, a white wine that is lightly acidic and slightly sparkling, accompanies the aperitif on the coast, while in Álava the wines of Rioja Alavesa rival the best reds in the country. Cod in pil-pil sauce, hake in green sauce, kokotxas and meat grill restaurants are other pillars of a Basque table that turns any stop on a camping trip into a complete gastronomic experience.

The campsite accommodation on offer covers options for every profile: pitches for tents in coastal or mountain settings, spaces for caravans and motorhomes with full services, bungalows fully equipped for those who prefer to do without their own gear, and glamping options with tipis or wooden cabins that have gained ground in recent years. The Atlantic climate suggests visiting between June and September to enjoy the coast in mild temperatures, although autumn with the beech woods in colour and the green spring also have a special appeal. Surfing is one of the main reasons to visit the Basque coast: Zarautz, Mundaka and Sopelana are well-known names across the whole European circuit.
