Lac du Salagou fills a volcanic crater stained red by the surrounding ruffe (red clay) soils, one of the most distinctive landscapes of the inland Hérault, far from the Mediterranean beaches of the coast. Camping Les Vailhes is set beside the shore in Celles, a village that was abandoned because of the construction of the reservoir and is now slowly being repopulated. Dogs are allowed and hiking follows the volcanic paths around the lake. As it is open for the full season, it is best to book well ahead before visiting this unique geological corner.
