Saint-Jean-du-Gard marks the end of the line for the Cévennes steam train that climbs from Anduze, in a valley where the Gardon narrows between mountains covered in chestnut groves and old mulberry terraces once used for silk. Camping Bivouac Nature, a seasonal campsite, has glamping accommodation, a swimming pool and a spa, with access to the Gardon river beach and hiking trails to the Parc national des Cévennes, whose interpretation centre is in the village itself. It is an authentic base for discovering the deep Cévennes, away from the more touristy circuits of the region. As this is a seasonal campsite, it is advisable to confirm the exact opening dates before your visit.
